If you were up late Thursday, you caught history. New Covenant Academy swept Woodland 3-0 in the Class 2 championship at the Civic Center in St. Joseph. The match started more than an hour late because earlier contests ran long.

Lexi Burks delivered the match-deciding kill at about 10:30 p.m., and the student section celebrated from the stands. Coach Chenille (Bayless) Gaumer was inducted into the Missouri State University Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year.

  • Lexi Burks: 16 kills, 13 digs, three service aces
  • Kiera Edwards: 12 kills
  • Addy Mourey and Lillie Chapey: 35 assists combined
  • Woodland finished its season 24-8

The Wrap

Two lion siblings just got a birthday party at Dickerson Park Zoo. Visitors gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the lions' second birthday, only two weeks after the pair arrived from California. Keepers hid raw meat treats around the renovated habitat before opening the gates for the pair. Best birthday scavenger hunt we've heard of.
