Cora Scott is leaving her post as Springfield's chief spokesperson after 14 years

Cora Scott's exit became public Oct. 31 and was confirmed Nov. 2

  1. Jan. 2012Cora Scott joins the city as director of public information and civic engagement.
  2. Oct. 31Scott tells the Daily Citizen she is "transitioning from the City."
  3. Nov. 2Assistant director Melissa Hart confirms the news.

Cora Scott, Springfield's director of public information and civic engagement since January 2012, is leaving the city. She told the Daily Citizen on Oct. 31 that she is "transitioning from the City" and declined to say whether it was voluntary or involuntary. Assistant director Melissa Hart confirmed the news Monday, Nov. 2, and said the city couldn't comment further because it's a personnel matter.

“...on a scale of one to 10 — it's a 12.”

Greg Burris, former Springfield city manager

Former Mayor Ken McClure called Scott "a very effective voice in telling the city's story for 14 years." He also said he fears her exit will erode trust and confidence in city government: "I hope I'm wrong, but that's my fear." Of the eight council members the Daily Citizen contacted, only Bruce Adib-Yazdi had responded by publication.

City Council

The City Council accepted a $31,282,240 Phase 2 price for the Springfield Art Museum project

The Springfield Art Museum is heading into the second and final phase of its renovation and expansion. At its Oct. 26 meeting, the City Council accepted a guaranteed maximum price for Phase 2 from Contracting Company, which also oversaw Phase 1. The final cost may still change as city staff look for savings through a " process."

  • Added space: about 20,000 square feet
  • Phase 1 began: early 2025
  • Funding: sales tax, bonds, donations, state appropriation

Museum Director Nick Nelson blamed the delay on structural steel and other specialty materials. He also said he is confident the gap can be addressed.

The expansion will add about 20,000 square feet to a 50,000-square-foot museum

The museum foundation isn't done raising money. Executive director Kate Francis said that as recently as last week it formalized a six-figure naming opportunity with a Springfield native who now lives out of state.
