If you live in Christian County, here's the news: a resident has a confirmed case of measles, according to a Nov. 5 Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services news release. The person caught it after an exposure in another Missouri county, and people who were exposed are being contacted. The Christian County Health Department announced the case too, and no public exposure sites have been reported.

“With this case, we can no longer view measles as a disease of faraway places or the distant past.”

Aaron Winslow, Christian County Health Administrator

Health officials don't anticipate a widespread outbreak from this single case. Winslow said the best way to prevent community outbreaks is to achieve community immunity through vaccination.

  • First symptoms: fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes
  • Timing: first symptoms show 7–14 days after exposure
  • Lingers: up to two hours after an infected person leaves
