COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The area known as Ebenezer north of Springfield was named by settler Elizabeth Robberson in 1831—she chose the name from a Bible story that means 'stone of help.' Local historian Laura Nichols said the name lives on in the fire district and church.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Nonprofit professionals met on November 12 at White River Conference Center to discuss the unstable funding landscape and stress the value of unrestricted and recurring donations—local leaders including Winter Kinne urged donors to check with agencies to meet urgent needs as Giving Tuesday starts today. Donors were advised to use their gifts to support food banks and other essential services in our community.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The Springfield-Greene County Library District launched a two-week food drive Monday to help those facing food insecurity by partnering with Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation to collect canned foods, soups that only need water, mixes and snack packs. Donation boxes are available at all ten library branches and collected items will be distributed at local pantries, Head Start sites and the OACAC facility.  KY3

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Springfield craft breweries won 12 medals including five gold at the Missouri Beer Cup on Nov. 10 — Tie — Timber Beer Company led with five medals as its Sidetrack Stout earned gold; other brewers like Springfield Brewing Company also earned awards in different beer categories. Certified judges from the Missouri Craft Brewers Guild evaluated 181 beers from 36 categories at the event.  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ozark High School is changing its athletic and activity director job following Yancey Little's retirement. The revised role — which now reports directly to the superintendent to coordinate district-wide athletics and requires a master's degree — was board approved on Nov. 18, posted on Nov. 19, and the new director will start on July 1.  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Springfield crews treated roads with a salty solution (8,400 tons of salt were available) to keep black ice from forming as the first snow of the season melted and refroze. Some drivers noted slippery roads (residents appreciated the timely work) while officials increased treatment efforts for future winter weather.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT crews cleared snow on I-44 yesterday despite a narrow construction zone—using new 11-foot plow blades to navigate tight lanes. The department warns drivers to stay behind plows as it prepares for heavier snowfall and addresses a shortage of drivers statewide.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new flu strain, Subclade K, reached Springfield after circulating abroad and may bring more severe symptoms than usual flu cases. Health officials urge residents to get a flu shot since the current vaccine might not fully protect against the virus — vaccination remains crucial as the worst months of the season approach.  KY3

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Rockwood Motor Court at 2204 W. College St. — a hotel dating to 1929 and renovated in 2019 — was added to the Historic Hotels of America list by Visit Springfield. The motel — the oldest operating on Route 66 — now joins over 300 sites and is set to highlight the upcoming centennial celebration in 2026.  Springfield News-Leader

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri State freshman wide receiver Tristian Gardner will enter the NCAA transfer portal—he led Conference USA freshmen with 465 receiving yards and six touchdowns and his move may leave the Bears without a key player for their bowl game.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Missouri launched sports betting on Monday, letting fans wager on points scored by professional athletes — though bets on Missouri college players are not allowed.  KY3
  • The Missouri State Bears finished the season 7-5 and earned a bowl game spot after getting an NCAA waiver for their move to Conference USA (supported by state lawmakers). Bowl matchups and ticket details will be announced after the Bowl Selection Show on Dec 7.  Springfield News-Leader
