COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Springfield grocery stores and restaurants are offering free or discounted meals for families after SNAP benefits were reduced — Hy-Vee is serving free kids meals with a rotating menu from Nov. 3 to Nov. 7, while Druff's Diner, Sleepy Opossum and Rebar Kitchen have also set up programs to help those in need as donations and government aid continue to support local efforts.  Springfield News-Leader
  • A list of food pantries is now available to help residents get USDA packages and senior boxes. The list includes Calvary Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Buffalo—serving every 3rd Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m.—as well as pantries at Prairie Chapel UMC in Urbana, Miller Christian Services Center in Miller, St. Susanne Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, and others with their phone numbers and hours provided.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Utilities is offering help options for SNAP recipients and other customers facing bill challenges due to the government shutdown — affected customers should call 417-863-9000 to avoid disconnection.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at Mercy’s Breast Center in Springfield say that women with dense breast tissue may need extra imaging because cancer can be hard to see, and Mercy now offers an abbreviated MRI that takes 10 to 15 minutes—costing $350 while many insurers do not yet cover the test.  KY3
  • Today is Buddy Check 3 day, which reminds residents to perform a self breast exam and encourage a friend to do the same. Breast radiologists from Mercy Hospital and Kansas City explained that dense breast tissue may require extra scans (and future insurance coverage improvements) to help support early detection and better care.  KY3
  • Children’s Mercy expanded pediatric care in Springfield as of November 1 by partnering with Mercy Springfield Communities+ the new services include inpatient care, neonatal intensive care, surgery, emergency treatment, and additional pediatric therapies to meet local needs.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Missourians face higher health insurance premiums next year as most carriers raise rates because federal tax credit subsidies may end—while one carrier lowers some premiums, others like Cox Health Plans increase them by over 30%. Open enrollment began November 1 and coverage will start January 1 for those who buy plans by December 15.  Springfield News-Leader
