  • Hy-Vee will provide free kids’ meals to children 12 and under from 4 to 7 p.m. next week while serving $3 dinners to other customers at its hot food service locations — the weekly menu features baked potato with pulled pork on Monday, spaghetti with meat sauce on Tuesday, chicken and noodles on Wednesday, chili with a cinnamon roll on Thursday, and a sesame or orange chicken rice bowl on Friday.  KY3

  • Community Partnership of the Ozarks is asking local businesses to sponsor crisis cold weather shelters running from Nov. 1 to March 31 when freezing temperatures are expected—veteran sports journalists Ned Reynolds and Scott Puryear will launch their new morning sports show on Monday, Nov. 3 with Missouri Sports Hall of Famer Art Hains co-hosting. Citywide remapping meetings, a new Four States Bank branch at 2045 S. Glenstone Ave scheduled to open in the first quarter, Arvest’s recent banking team additions, and Hollister’s new police chief set to begin training on Dec. 1 and assume command on Feb. 1 add to the ongoing community updates.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tamera Jahnke, the longtime dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences who also served as interim provost at Missouri State University, announced she will retire on June 30; her career began in 1986. The university will launch a national search + interview candidates in the spring to find her replacement.  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two fatal bear attacks occurred near the Ozarks in Arkansas this fall, and Missouri wildlife experts say the risk to people is low since most bears only rummage through trash or chicken coops—officials note that rising bear numbers have led to a limited hunting season for residents to help manage the population. Wildlife specialists advise safe practices and proper food storage when near bear habitats.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • About 2,000 bald eagles migrate to Missouri each winter and can be seen near lakes like Truman Lake. Their return shows a steady recovery from when they were endangered—around 200 nesting pairs now spend the winter here.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield Police offer Halloween safety tips by advising kids and parents to wear reflective costumes, check mask visibility, and use a phone or walkie-talkie to stay in touch. They also suggest taking a picture of a unique costume to help locate a child if it gets separated from the group — a measure aimed at keeping trick-or-treaters safe from suspicious treats and traffic.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • With clocks falling back this weekend—adding an hour of darkness—mental health experts warn that the extra dark hour may make people feel sluggish or low and advise spending time outdoors and eating hearty meals. They recommend speaking with a professional if these feelings persist.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 19th annual Bass Pro Marathon begins Sunday, November 2 at 7 a.m. at Bass Pro Shops on South Campbell with both a half and full race that will take runners through local neighborhoods, paved trails, historic Route 66 and downtown.
