COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pastor Michael Grant, missions director for the Assembly of God in Jamaica, was stranded in Miami after hurricane damage closed Jamaica’s airports — he learned of the storm during a teaching trip — and he is now working with Convoy of Hope to plan relief efforts to deliver food, water and supplies to those in need in Jamaica.  KY3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dickerson Park Zoo held its annual Pumpkin Squash event Tuesday where animals ate pumpkin treats — elephants, bears, wolves and tigers took part in fun enrichment activities. The zoo will switch to winter hours — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — starting Saturday, Nov. 1.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Sandbox Percussion, a group of college friends who love unique sounds and handmade instruments, will join the Springfield Symphony at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Billy the Kid concert on November 8 at 7:30 p.m. Their performance will use both standard drums and crafted instruments—offering a fresh, rhythmic experience for local music fans.  KSMU
  • Seventeen-year-old Mailyn Marsh (from Ozark) won the Miss Teen USA crown in Reno on October 23, and her win brought a four-year scholarship to Mississippi State University, $25,000 in cash, and modeling plus service opportunities. She joins two other Missouri titleholders in leading the nation with the most Miss Teen USA winners.  Springfield News-Leader

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Missouri job market faces challenges as layoffs continue and some job seekers take second jobs—employers are cautious with hiring over the next three to six months. Seasonal positions in retail and manufacturing remain open at companies like Bass Pro and Hiland Dairy.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leaders at Ozark’s Tiger Paw Early Childhood Center unveiled a new inclusive playground — designed so students of all abilities can play together. The project was funded with surplus funds from a 2020 to 2022 bond and will boost play opportunities for the center’s pre-K students.  KY3
  • Springfield Public Schools reported a steep jump in daily requests for food, clothing and hygiene vouchers from 20 requests to between 120 and 150—after a government shutdown and a social media post raised awareness. The nonprofit Care to Learn provided 2,385 vouchers this fall and officials said demand may exceed last year's total for the entire school year.  Springfield News-Leader

  • Missouri officials are urging drivers to buckle up, put their phones down and slow down as they warn that traffic deaths may rise during the holiday season. Local officers in Springfield and other cities are stepping up enforcement through programs like CARE—STORM to keep roads safe.  Springfield News-Leader

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri's basketball team ended last season with a loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and reached No. 14—now it will build on that season with returning player Mark Mitchell and a top recruiting class that includes transfer Sebastian Mack from UCLA to boost the backcourt. The Tigers, who have not had back-to-back winning seasons since 2013-14, will start a soft non-conference schedule on Nov. 3—then face tough SEC games with Florida and Kentucky.  KY3
  • SEC basketball returns with high stakes as Florida, the preseason favorite after its third NCAA title run last season, leads five other ranked teams including Kentucky, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Auburn — all set to compete for a spot in March Madness. New transfers and coaching changes add extra pressure as teams prepare to battle through a challenging season.  KY3
  • Missouri State hosted Florida International on October 29 at 7 p.m.—the matchup came after Missouri State's win over New Mexico State and Florida International's loss to Kennesaw State, with both teams aiming to improve their season performance.  KY3
