COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Partnership of the Ozarks is launching its 'Work Place to Warm Place' campaign to ask local businesses and organizations to sponsor teams of five volunteers to keep cold-weather shelters open from Nov. 1 until March 31 when overnight lows fall below freezing. The volunteer-run shelters—staffed with morning, evening, and overnight shifts—will help provide warmth and safety to neighbors in need.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Honor Flight of the Ozarks is taking its last flight of the year today, departing at 4:30 a.m. from Springfield-Branson National Airport with 81 veterans headed to Washington, D.C.—Springfield residents are invited to welcome the veterans back at the airport by 7 p.m.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield’s GLO Center will receive funds from pop star Chappell Roan’s new Midwest Princess Project, which raised over $400,000 from pop-up shows. The donation will support queer youth and expand services, the center’s executive director said—marking a new step in local support.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Springfield filmmaker Randy Bacon will hold a red carpet premiere for his documentary “The Soft Surrender” at the Gillioz Theatre on Nov. 1—highlighting personal stories on hospice and palliative care. The event includes a pre-party at 5 p.m., a screening at 6:30 p.m. and a post-film Q&A session, with tickets priced between $40 and $112.30.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Ozarks’ black walnut harvest season is extended until Nov. 14 because warm weather kept the nuts on the trees longer. Hammons Black Walnuts is buying freshly hulled walnuts (at $13 per 100 pounds) to help local harvesters in Missouri complete the season.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A $20,000 award from the Melinda J McDaniel Charitable Trust at Bank of America has created a scholarship fund for nearly 770 students from rural, private, and homeschool groups to visit the History Museum on the Square—funds that remove cost barriers for field trips. Museum Education Manager Whitney Mosley said the grant will help students experience interactive history learning in Springfield—making local heritage more accessible.  KSMU
  • Missouri State University said international student enrollment declined 16% overall – with a 19% drop at its Springfield campus and a 10% decrease at its China campus – due to visa issues affecting about 275 students. The university said the loss may hurt finances and reduce cultural exchange for all students.  KY3
  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is offering a free virtual class titled Less Lawn, More Life: The Pollinator Plot Twist on November 3 from 5 to 6 p.m. — Conservation educator Stacia Skinner will lead the session to show how native blooms attract pollinators and birds, and interested residents must register beforehand.  OzarksFirst.com

  • Four Ozarks day trips offer scenic trails and colorful leaves within a two-hour drive — each route, from fishing at Roaring River State Park to exploring the historic mill at Alley Spring, has its own charm.   • City Utilities is sharing winter safety tips to help residents keep their homes safe and warm as cold weather arrives. They advise replacing air filters, scheduling furnace inspections, installing carbon monoxide alarms, clearing vents, and leaving if a natural gas leak is suspected—CU responds to leaks 24/7 at no charge.  OzarksFirst.com
  • City leaders in Springfield formed the Gun Safety Violence Reduction Collaborative in 2024 to cut gun deaths, and shots-fired calls have dropped in the past two years—efforts include giving hundreds of lock boxes for safe firearm storage to prevent suicides. Co-chair Francine Pratt said it takes four seconds to change a mind about using a gun, and safe storage may save lives.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Missouri food pantries are bracing for increased demand after the Missouri Department of Social Services announced on Oct 20 that SNAP benefits will be paused amid a potential federal shutdown.
