COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Good Samaritan Boys Ranch—a regional leader for over 65 years—helps foster youth in Southwest Missouri heal with tailored therapy, on-site schooling, and care programs, and it will soon break ground on a new warehouse space to store furniture for transitional living apartments.  OzarksFirst.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new breakfast cafe Hatch & Harvest will have a soft opening in early November at 2833 W. Chestnut Expressway in West Springfield—owner Donny Veliu said the cafe will serve breakfast staples and unique options like a breakfast quesadilla with chorizo while operating from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Veliu, who has family ties to the local restaurant scene, has invested in renovations and plans to hire about 12 employees as the business prepares for its grand opening later on.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Mother and daughter Linh Neal & Mui opened their Vietnamese restaurant Banh Mi & Me earlier this October at 3405 E. Battlefield Road, Suite 124 to bring traditional banh mi sandwiches, noodles, and coffee brewed with robusta beans to southeast Springfield. The menu features seven sandwich varieties along with locally sourced ingredients that honor their Vietnamese heritage.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Local law firm Aaron Sachs & Associates replaced Brad Bradshaw's longtime sign atop Plaza Towers—showing that Sachs now holds a lease on suite 601 to meet workers' compensation clients. City rules require only tenants to advertise on the billboard and Bradshaw's firm no longer qualifies after leaving its space.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 'Nevertheless, She Persisted' exhibition grew from a Springfield show at Obelisk Gallery and now runs at C-Art Gallery at 208 E. Commercial St until Nov. 30 — showcasing the work of local women artists. Keisha McMillen leads with her mixed media piece 'Pimpin’ Butterflies' — sparking a creative journey that invites viewers to explore personal and bold expressions of art.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Mailyn Marsh, an honors student at Ozark High School, won the Miss Teen USA crown in Reno late Thursday night + Minnesota’s Maisie Jane Adams earned first-runner-up.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri State University's Bear Pantry served over 3,000 visits by mid-October this year—up from 2,000 last fall—and the on-campus pantry, located on the first floor of Plaster Student Union, relies on donations to help students, staff, and faculty facing food insecurity. Donations, both food and monetary, are needed to add more perishable options and keep the pantry stocked.  Springfield News-Leader

  • A U.S. naturalization ceremony scheduled for Oct.29 at Missouri State University has been canceled due to the ongoing federal government shutdown—no plans are in place to reschedule, and applicants are advised to contact U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services for guidance.  OzarksFirst.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, 98.7 The Dove in partnership with Coyotes Adobe Cafe hosted the 26th annual Boobapalooza fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks—featuring a breakfast buffet, raffle items, t-shirts and a live Kevin and Chris show. Kevin Howard said all proceeds help support families dealing with breast cancer as donated food and volunteer efforts keep the event running.  OzarksFirst.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity and local businesses are fixing up a home for Ashley McCormick and her three children so they can move in next year. The work—including a new roof from a local firm and a $50,000 donation—will be finished in about six months.  KSMU
  • Congress is battling a potential shutdown in Washington and some USDA home loan programs for Springfield buyers and sellers face delays while FHA and VA loans are processing normally—local lenders and realtors advise customers to check with their local banks for details.
