COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Springfield Catholic teen used social media to raise funds for his guardian fee and donated an extra $1,500 to Honor Flight of the Ozarks ahead of the final flight on Oct. 29. Officials said 81 veterans and guardians will leave Springfield-Branson National Airport at 4:30 a.m. for a trip to Washington, D.C. — his donation shows that young people care about veterans.  Springfield News-Leader

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After a slow start to the harvest season, recent winds and cooler air helped wild Black Walnuts fall and Hammons Products Company in Stockton will continue buying nuts at $13 per 100 pounds until November 14—buyers can bring any amount at one of about 170 hulling sites across 13 states.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Drury University announced it received nearly 6 million dollars in donations and future commitments since June 1 — funds that will support scholarships, programs and facility improvements as part of its Fortify the Future campaign running through May 2027. Alumni, community members and board members made these gifts, which were revealed on Oct. 22 at the Sunderland Lyceum in Olin Library.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Glendale High senior Luke Taylor was chosen as Student of the Month for October by readers from nominations made by school authorities—he was recognized for his hard work and positive influence on his peers.   • Head Start programs in the Ozarks remain open because they secured funding in September while over 130 programs nationwide risk losing cash if the shutdown continues past November 1—local families depend on these centers for education and resources.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MODOT delayed the Sunshine Street Bridge project until the end of the year — weather issues and slow progress pushed back the schedule that started in August and was planned to finish early December. Traffic has worsened as a section of Chestnut Expressway remains closed, with local business owner Herson Aparicio reporting that the delay is harming his sales.  OzarksFirst.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri State beat New Mexico State 24-17 in overtime yesterday. The team saw quarterback Jacob Clark return from a knee injury and the defense made a key play—safety Dylan Dixson’s walk-off interception—to secure the win.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Tara Venable, a senior headed for Missouri State from Ozark, nears 1,700 career kills as she guides a 30-2 Tigers team into its final district tournament — a key step toward back-to-back Class 5 state finals.   • Mizzou will face Vanderbilt soon in a College Football Playoff elimination game — the Tigers must win to improve their playoff chances in the Southeastern Conference. This challenging road test will be a key moment in their season.  KY3
  • Rob Marsh, CEO of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, said he ended the Price Cutter Charity Championship and sold the longtime building to repay nearly $750,000 to charities and secure the nonprofit’s future. He said the foundation will hold a Celebration of Sharing (scheduled for Nov. 18) to give over $400,000 to charities and move into a temporary headquarters on Walnut Street (next to Springfield Brewing Company) while planning for a permanent home by 2027.  Springfield News-Leader
