COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri will host a low-cost microchip clinic Friday for $25 per pet to help protect pets during the holiday travel season. Pet owners must bring dogs on leashes and cats in carriers and the clinic will run on a first-come, first-served basis (9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.).  KY3
  • On Thursday, Ozarks Food Harvest will provide free groceries to up to 300 federal workers affected by the government shutdown during a drive-thru event at the O'Reilly Center for Hunger Relief (2810 N. Cedarbrook Ave) where they must pre-register by noon Wednesday and present valid federal ID.  KY3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dickerson Park Zoo showcased its turkey vulture on October’s The Wild Side — where zookeeper KyAnne Hilger explained how turkey and black vultures differ.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Missouri Board of Education will meet in Springfield for two days in December to tour SPS programs, hold a student forum, and complete an official board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 9. The visit will begin Monday, Dec. 8 at noon and include sessions with community partners — further details will be shared later.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Cub Scouts and their families will visit the History Museum on the Square on Nov. 8 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to complete interactive stations that teach Springfield history and earn badges (scouts and leaders pay a special $13 admission) and (a parent or troop leader must supervise each group).  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Social Services announced that if the government shutdown continues, SNAP benefits will be suspended next month — prompting local food banks like Ozarks Food Harvest to prepare for increased requests as over 23,000 federal workers may lose their benefits.  OzarksFirst.com
  • The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has proposed a draft amendment that would let marijuana dispensaries offer curbside pickup with online payment and required surveillance cameras; the agency is seeking public feedback through Oct. 28. Local dispensary employees said the plan could help older customers and those with limited mobility—improving service accessibility.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Springfield woman has been vaccinating dogs belonging to the homeless to boost pet health & reduce disease risks, and she plans to continue her work to support vulnerable animals.  KY3
  • The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will hold National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 25 in the Ozarks to let people safely dispose of expired and unwanted prescription drugs. Several Springfield sites, including police stations and drug stores, will be set up with secure drop-off boxes+the program is one of the agency’s two annual events.  KY3

  • The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame announced it will move to a downtown facility on West Walnut Street — it sold its old building at Highland Springs Country Club to reach more visitors. The museum is reviewing permanent sites and will expand exhibits and educational programs.  KY3
