COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Stu McCall, father of Stacy McCall from the noted Three Missing Women case, passed away on Oct. 6 at age 82. His funeral service is today at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m.—he is survived by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and other family members, and donations are requested in his name instead of flowers.  OzarksFirst.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kansas City area-based Fresh Karma is planning a comprehensive dispensary next to Buc-ee’s on N. Beaver Road and presented its rezoning request to Springfield City Council—The company said its plan includes strict 24/7 security and will keep the facility at least 1,000 feet from schools, day care, or churches as the council votes on Oct. 20.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grace Billingsley will play Janet for the fourth and final time in High Tide Theatrical’s production of 'The Rocky Horror Show' today at The Lightroom Lounge—running Oct. 10-25 with special midnight performances. She said her performance honors her late father, whose earlier work in design helped shape Springfield Contemporary Theatre.  Springfield Daily Citizen

  • A school in southwest Missouri is using AI to help prevent student suicides and support mental health—officials have not yet explained how they will safeguard student privacy.  KY3

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At the Horace Mann School-Park, the Greater Parkcrest Neighborhood Association along with Clean Green Springfield planted autumn blaze maple trees around the gazebo on Wednesday and Thursday to replace trees lost in last spring storms. The project was funded by the Hatch Foundation — aiming to boost clean air and safer streets for the park.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield-Branson National Airport is undergoing a $35 million renovation that includes a terrazzo flooring replacement—expected to finish in the lobby by Halloween—and a terminal apron expansion with a $10 million concrete pour over the next six weeks. The airport is also expanding short-term parking and adding five new jet bridges to support growing passenger traffic that is expected to exceed 1.5 million in 2025.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missouri health officials reported that West Nile virus caused three deaths and 15 hospitalizations as of last Thursday and warned residents to take precautions. They urged Springfield residents to use insect repellent and eliminate standing water—steps aimed at reducing the mosquito population.  KY3

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Kelly McGowan with the University of Missouri Extension Office stressed that apple harvest season in the Ozarks is here—grocery stores and local orchards provide fresh apples for residents. She advised that keeping the apples in the fridge maintains their freshness until used in apple creations—helping Springfield enjoy the season.  OzarksFirst.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri State beat Middle Tennessee by a score of 22 to 20 on Wednesday when backup quarterback Deuce Bailey led the offense because senior Jacob Clark did not play due to a knee injury—Bailey threw for 278 yards with one touchdown and also rushed for a score. Coach Ryan Beard said the team will try to have Clark ready by the New Mexico State game on Oct. 22.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Glendale’s standout golfer Page Bowman—daughter of a former PGA player—won back-to-back state championships and the Missouri Junior Amateur Championship before committing to play at Mizzou next fall. She will compete in the State Championship in Sedalia on October 20 and aims for a three-peat while improving her tee distance for college play.  Springfield Daily Citizen
