- ➤ Bass Pro Shops is hosting a nationwide holiday hiring event to fill 80 seasonal positions for its Ozarks stores as Missouri’s unemployment has risen to 4.1% this month. - ➤ VOTE417 is hosting a Banned Book Pop-Up Giveaway at Mother's Brewing Company from 2-4 p.m. this Saturday where the first 25 visitors will receive free copies of classic novels that have been challenged — an event marking Let Freedom Read Day and the end of Banned Books Week. - ➤ Springfield will honor Missouri’s last Revolutionary War veteran James Barham at a marker dedication ceremony at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Willard on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m.—more than 180 of his descendants and local history groups are expected to attend to remember his service. - ➤ A study by WalletHub found Missouri ranked 24th in student loan debt among states and Washington D.C.—it also ranked 43rd in grant and work opportunities. The report showed that student loans formed the largest part of American household debt below mortgages, with average balances over $39,000 and total debt over $1.66 trillion by the end of the first quarter of 2025. - ➤ Greene County assessor Brent Johnson said assessors have a legal right under Missouri law to enter outdoor areas on private property for appraisals while keeping home interiors private, and if asked to leave, they will depart, leave a door hanger, and send a follow-up letter — incomplete access may lead to inaccurate property valuations. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Clients and staff at RecoverED in Springfield planted a new garden outside Building B at Burrell Behavioral Health to help patients build a healthier relationship with food and gain hands-on recovery skills. The program will celebrate its milestone in early October and now offers intensive outpatient care while being the only state program to readily accept Medicaid — a crucial support for clients statewide.
