COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Firefighters from Springfield will visit public and private schools in October to teach young students fire and life safety lessons—aiming to lower fire incidents. In addition, they will offer free smoke alarms—helping protect homes.  OzarksFirst.com
  • A giant rock on Campbell Road near Total Access Urgent Care and Walmart Marketplace was painted yellow to help drivers avoid it+ visitors now take photos and celebrate anniversaries at the site. Its Facebook page, Springfield Rock Menace, has gained over 2,000 followers in two weeks.  OzarksFirst.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri State University unveiled its new Construction Education Success Center Monday at Kemper Hall to give students hands-on construction training; the 10,000-square-foot facility features a 30-foot-high training lab—where students practice aerial lift operation and crane safety—and also includes a construction management lab, study lounge and rooftop terrace. The $9.6 million project was funded by the MoExcels Workforce Initiative and private donations.  KY3
  • Local schools worked with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT this past spring to show students the dangers of impaired driving through a docudrama that simulated a fatal crash. The simulation recalled nearly 1,000 lives lost on Missouri roadways between 2020 and 2024 — a real warning about the risks of impaired driving.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Contractors are making progress on the courthouse expansion on N. Boonville Ave that will add a secure new entry connecting the current judicial facility with the former jail. The $19 million project funded by bonds from the 2017 sales tax will complete phase one — including a Family Courts/Juvenile Courts center — by fall.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed an executive order that refocuses SNAP to support healthy foods—such as fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins and dairy—and boost Missouri agriculture. The order directs the Department of Social Services to submit a waiver to the USDA Food and Nutrition Service that will help families improve their nutritional choices.  KY3
  • City of Springfield held a meeting Monday night at Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church—gathering feedback on the Sunshine Street Corridor Study that discussed proposals such as bike lanes, medians and a tree lined boulevard—with business owners emphasizing the need to maintain parking while residents called for lower speed limits. The city will meet again today from 4 to 6 p.m. to further review the ideas and determine affordable enhancements.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Marijuana has been legal for adults for nearly three years, but Missouri law bans its use in public places such as parks, streets, and transit—permitting use only at home or in allowed lounges. People caught smoking in public may face a fine up to $100.  Springfield News-Leader

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jordan Valley Community Health Center advises people with seasonal migraines to keep a headache diary and maintain a regular schedule since weather changes like temperature drops and lower humidity can trigger attacks. Experts suggest drinking more water and paying careful attention to sleep as the days get shorter.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local high school football players had standout games in Week 5, with Will Ross of Glendale throwing for 325 yards and Parkview's Willie Otto scoring three touchdowns—players made key plays in several matchups.
