- ➤ Members of Missouri State University's Turning Point USA group will hold a prayer vigil for slain activist Charlie Kirk on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. near the Plaster Student Union—details will be finalized after a meeting with university leaders. Springfield News-Leader
- ➤ The miniature Joplin + Springfield Railway closed today after summer storms severely damaged the tracks, ending over twenty years of nearly 100,000 free rides each summer and fall. Volunteers and supporters gathered last week to remember the rides as the trains were moved to Indiana and the tracks dismantled, leaving only a gravel path into the woods. OzarksFirst.com

- ➤ Owen Martin, a Springfield-area performer from Marshfield, is traveling to Nashville on Oct. 28 to audition for American Idol—he will perform his original songs and follow his summer album 'Til the sun sleeps with a new single, Barefoot Mud, due Sept. 26. - ➤ The University of Missouri’s Springfield campus will expand its program to a four-year med school to help with the shortage of doctors by welcoming first-year students in 2027 & planning to have four classes by fall 2030. - ➤ City Utilities is celebrating National Clean Energy Week from Sept. 15-19 by showcasing its efforts to lower carbon emissions and offer rebates that help Springfield residents save on utility bills. Following its Integrated Resource Plan, the utility has reduced carbon emissions by 30% since 2025 and will expand cleaner energy projects to cut emissions 70% by 2035 and reach net zero by 2050. - ➤ A sudden dry spell and late summer have created a flash drought that raised the fire risk across the Ozarks. Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and follow safety rules after a brush fire on September 11 destroyed several small buildings—warning that fires must be kept small and attended until completely out. - ➤ After the Missouri general assembly approved a new congressional map on Friday, Missourians filed three lawsuits and started a petition to put the plan up for a statewide vote—meant to pause its implementation. - ➤ Lone Pine Avenue closed for roughly two weeks between the Galloway roundabout and the north Sequiota Park entrance—final work on the Galloway Street Widening Project was completed starting Sept. 15.
