- ➤ Springfield was named one of the top 25 food manufacturing hubs in the US by Global Location Strategies, rising 31 spots from last year. Food manufacturing now makes up 16.2% of all local manufacturing jobs — a sign of growing opportunity for investors and workers in the area. OzarksFirst.com

- ➤ Bacon, bourbon and beer lovers will gather in Springfield next month for the 8th annual Ozarks Bacon Fest—held at the E-Plex on Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—where top chefs serve regional dishes and all attendees must be 21. OzarksFirst.com
- ➤ Organizers of the African-American Heritage Trail unveiled the Milly Sawyers marker, the tenth on the trail, at the corner of Boonville Avenue and Water Street on August 27th. Sawyers, who won her freedom after suing for release, was honored for her key role in our history and her story inspired a play and film. Springfield Daily Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Drury University and Springfield Public Schools started the DATSE graduate degree program this summer, letting paraprofessionals from six SPS schools earn a Master’s in Special Education and provisional teacher certification—this partnership offers tuition discounts and a unified study plan for future educators. - ➤ Springfield teacher Danielle O’Neil from Sherwood Elementary was named one of seven finalists for the Missouri State Teacher of the Year award—she will join the recognition event on October 27—and will serve as Missouri’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year. OzarksFirst.com
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Highway 13 Butterfly Trail is a 292-mile corridor—planned to run 13 miles on either side of Highway 13 through 12 Missouri counties—that will include gardens, murals and interpretive signs to help butterflies and support local communities. The project, revived during planning for the Little Otter Creek Reservoir, involves partners like the Missouri Department of Transportation and local organizations and will boost rural tourism and habitat restoration. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ House Bill 594 took effect on Thursday — it makes diapers, menstrual products, and incontinence supplies exempt from state sales tax to save shoppers about 50 cents on tampons and $1.50 on diapers while applying the exemption automatically at checkout. KY3
- ➤ Missouri laws that took effect on August 28th ended employer obligations for paid sick leave and cost-of-living adjustments for minimum wage, phased out temporary license tags by requiring sales tax at the time of purchase, made hazing a criminal offense while banning certain childhood marriages, and required excavators to call Missouri 811 before starting work — they also require water export permits to protect the state’s supply amid drought concerns.
