CULTURE NEWS

  • The History Museum on the Square is celebrating 50 years by launching Haunted History Walking Tours every Friday and Saturday night from Sept. 5 to Nov. 1—bus tours will also leave the museum to cover downtown and local landmarks while raising funds for the museum. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri State University reported flat first-week enrollment numbers and expects international student numbers to drop—officials remain cautiously optimistic about steady figures from incoming freshmen, transfers and dual-credit students. The school will release its final enrollment count in September.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Kickapoo High School senior Cy Griffith was recognized for his leadership when he represented Missouri at Boys State and American Legion Boys Nation this summer—he was named Missouri’s Samsung American Legion Scholarship recipient and will explore college options this fall while serving as student body president at Kickapoo.  Springfield News-Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri’s new safety law, HB495, goes into effect tomorrow and adds a statute that makes car break-ins a second-degree burglary—if a person checks several vehicles to get in, they can be charged with a class E felony. The law also targets organized retail theft by establishing penalties for repeated thefts and will give police new tools to hold criminals accountable.  KY3
  • Pieces of the Chadwick Flyer bridge have arrived in Ozark and will help form the pedestrian span over Highway 65—part of the 12-mile trail that will connect Springfield to Ozark; the city said Phase 4 work will be complete in 2026.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Missouri today became the first state to let taxpayers keep profits from selling investments by exempting capital gains from income tax — the law also removes sales tax from diapers and feminine hygiene products. The change may cut state revenue by more than $625 million and will be reflected on tax returns due in April.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Today, City Utilities CEO Dwayne Fulk discussed widespread outages, disconnect policy, and water infrastructure on the 'In Our Town' podcast with host Tom Carlson—he explained that the utility will extend services to new areas and maintain the system more carefully.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Ebenezer Fire Protection District has opened its new station on State Highway WW with upgraded equipment including electric extrication tools and a 45,000-gallon water tank for areas lacking hydrants—this facility also has meeting rooms and a rest area for firefighters. The station will host an open house on October 10 to welcome the community.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri State will open its first FBS season on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.—the Bears face 11-time national champion USC at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with the game set to air on Big Ten Network. The team will also receive $1.15 million from USC for the trip, marking a historic moment in its program.  Springfield Daily Citizen
