COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Firefighters have reminded Springfield residents to use air fryers carefully because these appliances can start fires if not maintained or given proper space for ventilation. They advise keeping a fire extinguisher nearby and regularly checking wiring and cleanliness—measures that help prevent grease fires.  KY3

BUSINESS NEWS

  • LowerDeck94 LLC, linked to Springfield Brew Co. and John D. Hammons Jr., withdrew its application for a Nixa mixed-use development after neighbors and the Planning and Zoning Commission raised concerns over noise and road safety. The proposal for a three-acre site near Tracker Road and Old Castle Road included a bar and restaurant, and the withdrawal was confirmed on August 21—after a commission vote of 4 to 2—halting the project.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CRIME NEWS

  • Six local and federal officers were awarded the 2025 Guardian of Justice Award at the U.S. District Court in Springfield on August 21 for their roles in investigating a border patrol murder plot and multiple shootings linked to gang activity—one officer led efforts to capture an escaped suspect while another team’s work resulted in federal indictments.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Somali national Mahamud Tooxoow Mahamed, 43, pleaded guilty in federal court to kidnapping resulting in the death of J.M.—her body was found in July near Highway 59 after she reported being held at knife point and her three young children were later taken into state custody.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Springfield updated residents on plans to clean up storm debris from the April 29 and June 29 storms. Public Works has picked up debris in 77% of Zone 1 and 57% of Zone 3—totaling 11,807 cubic yards so far—and will start Zone 2 pickups from August 25 to 29 and Zone 4 pickups from Sept. 1 to 5 while asking residents to have debris at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup days.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Springfield City Manager David Cameron took office on July 7 and has met with residents and community leaders to learn about local issues like sidewalks and animal control—he said he will review the budget in 90 days and work with partners on downtown projects including a new convention center.  KY3
