COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Work began on a new Safe to Sleep shelter in Springfield as Crosslines Community Outreach upgrades its emergency women’s shelter to offer private sleeping pods and better amenities. The facility will hold 50 women and is expected to open by next year — the group has secured $2 million and will continue fundraising to complete the project. KY3
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Springfield man—Abel Johnson—faces charges for unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action after he allegedly shot at an SUV on West Lindberg on August 13, resulting in a victim being hit and a $50,000 bond set by a judge. KY3
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Queen City Shakespeare Company debuts its experimental production of The Tempest from Aug. 21—30 in a pop-up space next door to J.O.B. Public House in Springfield. Director Moe Callahan leads a cast of 13 actors who use masks, puppetry, and projections to bring magic and modern themes to Shakespeare’s classic play. Springfield Daily Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On August 14, students moved into their dorms at Missouri State University as families helped them settle in, and many felt both excitement and sorrow about starting college. Classes will begin on August 18 (a key step for new students). OzarksFirst.com
- ➤ Ozarks Tech celebrated a new $5 million, 19,600-square-foot training center at its Richwood Valley campus on Aug. 13 that will support agriculture and line worker programs—built with federal, state, and local funds. State Rep. Melanie Stinnet and U.S. Rep. Eric Burlison attended the ceremony as college officials said the center will boost local job skills. Springfield Daily Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Gaming Commission selected Circa Sports and DraftKings for its two untethered sports betting licenses—FanDuel was not chosen. The state will launch online betting by December 1 to generate tax revenue for education and gaming expenses. KY3
- ➤ Springfield’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6—0 on Aug. 14 to support a revised Chimney Rock subdivision that cuts lots from 40 to 29 and removes access to Arcadia Avenue. The City Council will hold a public hearing on Sept. 8 and neighbors remain worried about increased traffic on Mimosa Street. Springfield Daily Citizen

- ➤ Locals from Springfield have a new outdoor option with an easy five-mile float on the James River near Galena where clear water and tall bluffs create a refreshing escape.
