- ➤ On August 13th, Brightspeed and Little Free Library installed Springfield's first book-sharing box in the Glenstone Hills neighborhood—an effort to provide reading materials where access is limited. Brightspeed plans to sponsor another box in Columbia as part of a project covering 28 neighborhoods in 20 states. OzarksFirst.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On August 13, more than 3,000 Springfield Public Schools staff attended a back-to-school rally at Great Southern Bank Arena to celebrate the upcoming school year starting August 19—teachers showed school spirit with themed costumes and inspiring words from Superintendent Grenita Lathan highlighting test score gains and future plans. - ➤ Republic Intermediate School held an open house and ribbon cutting on August 11—teachers and families gathered to prepare for first classes that will start on Tuesday, August 19. The new 124,000-square foot building on 78 acres was funded by a bond passed by Republic voters in 2023 to ease the transition from elementary to middle school. Springfield Daily Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Campbell Avenue will close between Division Street and Lynn Street starting on Monday, August 18 for six weeks as a private development begins construction. Drivers must follow a detour via Lynn Street + Boonville Avenue until the road reopens in early October. OzarksFirst.com
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Missouri's rural hospitals face financial challenges—Medicaid cuts have hurt profits so some may close, affecting access to care at 67 facilities. KY3
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Health began investigating a possible brain-eating amoeba after a Lake of the Ozarks skier showed symptoms. Experts say that the rare infection, which enters the nose—posing a very low risk—is extremely uncommon and advise swimmers to use simple precautions. KY3
- ➤ Starting November, Children's Mercy KC will manage Mercy Springfield's hospital-based pediatric care & specialized services so local families no longer need to travel far for treatment. The joint operating agreement finalizes a long-pursued plan to bring advanced pediatric care to the region. Springfield Daily Citizen
