COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents impacted by recent storms can join free disaster relief workshops hosted by the SBA and local partners today from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, August 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Public Safety Center, 330 W. Scott Street—where they will learn about available disaster loans and steps to recover from the damage.  OzarksFirst.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A Greene County judge sentenced Tarrin Dicks to 15 years in prison for a robbery plan that went wrong and killed her brother and another man in Springfield on Feb. 22—she used Facebook messaging to lure a victim for a marijuana heist.  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new 19600 square foot Technical Training Center opened at Ozarks Tech’s Richwood Valley Campus on Wednesday to offer hands-on training in electrical distribution systems and agriculture. Classes begin this fall and the $5 million facility was funded with $2.5 million from the MoExcel program — over $1.7 million from the Economic Development Administration and college funds.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield City Council approved the construction manager at risk method on August 11 for a new downtown event center, and the city issued a request for qualifications for architects on August 12 to start design work if state funds drop. City staff plan to request qualifications for a construction manager next week to meet spending deadlines as the project depends on state funds and a hotel tax increase on Nov. 4.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • On July 31, the Christian County Commission adopted a zoning amendment to create a groundwater recharge protection area for Smallin Cave. The new rule—Christian County’s first groundwater overlay district—aims to guard the cave from sediment and contaminants linked to nearby development.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Barbara Rae Hughes, a financial advisor with experience on a fire-department board, was chosen today by the Greene County Commission to serve a three-year term on the Springfield-Greene County Library District’s Board of Trustees. She will focus on key duties such as hiring a director, setting a budget, and overseeing construction projects.  Springfield Daily Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • CoxHealth in Springfield is introducing a new FDA-approved procedure called TAMBE to treat aortic aneurysms that will cut hospital stays to as little as three to five days—Dr. Gallo said the minimally invasive technique helps patients avoid extensive surgery and long travel for treatment.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pitcher Brycen Mautz had a tough 2024 with a 3-13 record and 5.18 ERA at High-A Peoria but showed improvement with strong July starts and a boost in confidence, according to manager Patrick Anderson. He is set to pitch today at 7:05 p.m. in Springfield against the Wichita Wind Surge — a sign his hard work is paying off.  Springfield Daily Citizen
