COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Willow Springs Mo. animal rescue group opened its first shelter exclusively for cats yesterday—its new facility will help the group care for and rehome local felines as it plans to expand services.  KY3

CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield judge sentenced Tarrin Dicks to 15 years in prison for the deaths of Trevin Dicks and Reggie Carey on South Erie Street in February 2024—she entered an Alford plea while co-defendant Izaiah Crabb received 10 years for first-degree attempted robbery on August 5.  OzarksFirst.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • White City Park in Springfield was a popular amusement park in the early 1900s that featured a roller coaster and baseball games—earning it the nickname Coney Island of the Southwest. After financial troubles led to its auction, the site later became the Assemblies of God’s National Headquarters.  Springfield Daily Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Springfield reader asked about e-scooter laws after noticing many riders on sidewalks and streets — raising questions about rider safety. Springfield police and park officials say riders must wear helmets, hold a valid driver’s license, and avoid business districts — rules enforced by local authorities on local trails.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • City crews have begun sidewalk improvements on Mt. Vernon Street between Lulwood Avenue and Miller Avenue in Springfield to boost pedestrian safety and connectivity to nearby schools and homes. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and follow detour signs along Miller Avenue, Grand Street, Haseltine Avenue, and Chestnut Expressway—work is scheduled to last about six weeks and cost approximately $813,000.  KY3
  • Missouri Attorney General Bailey sent warning letters to 37 telecom companies, telling them to stop illegal robocalls that broke FCC rules—rules that let scammers reach Missourians—while urging consumers to report suspicious calls. The letters are part of a nationwide campaign to protect citizens from fraud and harassment.  OzarksFirst.com
  • The City of Springfield is accepting statements of qualification from architectural firms to design a new downtown convention and event center with exhibit halls, ballrooms, meeting rooms, parking and on-site gathering spaces that meet LEED Silver standards—submissions are due by August 28 at 4 p.m. Funding will come from a half-cent sales tax, state appropriations and a bond issue—construction manager at risk services will be sought next Monday.  KSMU

  • Missouri State linebacker Jared Lloyd returned after missing last season because of injuries from a June crash when an RV driver did not yield near campus. Coach Ryan Beard called his recovery 'a miracle in action'—a sign of his strong will as he gets ready for the team’s game on Aug. 30 at USC.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Glendale quarterback Cash Newberry trimmed down from a bulky offseason—he now trusts his experienced receivers to guide his team into the season opener on Aug. 29.
