COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, Jackson Cantwell and his teammates donated backpacks to children at the Boys & Girls Club’s Stalnaker Unit in Springfield. Cantwell, the top high school football prospect in his class, said he enjoyed playing games with the kids and will start his final season with Nixa on August 29 before joining the University of Miami.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Nearly 10,000 readers have narrowed the Captain Springfield contest from four candidates to two by selecting Clay McGranahan, VP at Arc of the Ozarks, and Nki Calloway, co-founder of Mosaic Arts Collective. Voting for the final round opens Thursday+closes midday Friday, with the winner to be announced after all votes are counted.  Springfield News-Leader

BUSINESS NEWS

  • One of Springfield’s largest companies, O’Reilly Automotive Inc, filed a lawsuit on July 30 against pharmacy benefit managers CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, and Optum Rx and insulin makers Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi (alleging they conspired to raise insulin prices by up to 1000%). The suit claims the companies violated the law while the defendants deny the allegations and say they are working to keep insulin affordable.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri State Bears mourned the passing of Keith Boaz — the executive director of athletic and entertainment facilities — who died on August 7. A Springfield native, he had worked at the university since 2003 and was known for his deep commitment to campus life.  OzarksFirst.com
  • At yesterday’s State of the Schools event at Glendale High School, Superintendent Grenita Lathan reviewed last year’s testing success—a 2.2% rise in language arts that beat the 2% goal—and outlined plans to update the strategic plan, launch Family Curriculum Academies in Title 1 schools, and expand teacher training. Community leaders also participated to show support for SPS as the district prepares for a new school year.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan delivered her state of the schools address on Thursday morning at Glendale High School and outlined priorities to continue the district’s academic progress for the 2025—2026 school year—about 400 community leaders attended the event. District leaders will soon revisit their strategic plan before students return on Tuesday, August 19.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Developer Ralph Duda submitted a new rezoning proposal for the northwest corner of Sunshine Street and National Avenue to allow limited uses such as a medical office or restaurant without a drive-thru—he said the plan will ease neighborhood impact by adding a 10-foot easement for a new right-turn lane. The proposal will be reviewed by Planning and Zoning on Sept 11 after a public meeting by Aug 21 and is slated for a City Council reading on Oct 6 with a vote on Oct 20.  Springfield Daily Citizen
