- ➤ Jane Pitt, a Springfield philanthropist and mother of actor Brad Pitt and local businessman Doug Pitt, died on August 5 at age 84 in Springfield. She was known for her charitable work, including a $1 million donation that helped establish a pediatric cancer center at Mercy Hospital + serving as a school counselor and dedicated volunteer. KY3
- ➤ Sheila Michaels, a former Nixa librarian, created the BookBag program to help students during the summer by giving free school supply kits, hygiene items and books. - ➤ After nearly 10,000 votes in the quarterfinal, Nki Calloway and Brooke Johnston advanced by winning close contests against OTC's Alberta Smith and Grupo Latinamerica's Yolanda Lorge in the Captain Springfield contest. Calloway will face TV newsman Jesse Inman while Johnston meets Clay McGranahan in the final voting held today—winner to be announced late this week or early next. Springfield News-Leader
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police responded just after 6 a.m. to a domestic disturbance near Barnes and Cairo where shots were fired into the ground—one man was arrested for domestic assault and others were detained but later released—as officers managed a large police response in Springfield. OzarksFirst.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Grenita Lathan will deliver her annual State of the Schools address later this week at 7:30 a.m. at Glendale High School on S. - ➤ Springfield Public Schools updated its suicide prevention policy following a state requirement and added the hotline—988—to student ID badges; counselors now train staff to spot student struggles and notify parents in a crisis. - ➤ Springfield is still waiting for its $24.8 million BUILD grant to build three new trail connections in west Springfield—delays stem from a large backlog at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
