- ➤ Construction is underway on a new boardwalk at Dickerson Park Zoo after the old boardwalk closed years ago because it was unsafe. The new boardwalk will open in early 2026 and will offer visitors an elevated view of the black bear and swift fox enclosures + a gazebo for keeper interaction that saves guests a quarter-mile walk. - ➤ The Midtown Carnegie Branch Library reopened last month and now has a Maker Space stocked with machines like a 3D printer and laser engraver for creative projects. Visitors can book one-on-one sessions—available by appointment except during open studio hours on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.—to use the equipment free of charge. KSMU
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The FBI said that National Prearranged Services’ prepaid funeral contracts were a Ponzi-like scheme that defrauded nearly 100,000 customers—including a Springfield resident who paid small monthly amounts until her $800 plan was complete and later received a $599 check—while ex-attorney James Cassity and his partners stole about half a billion dollars, prompting new laws to protect funeral funds. - ➤ A Missouri teachers union report shows that as teachers prepare classrooms for student return, many express serious concerns about low pay, disruptive student behavior, and a lack of support. Seventy-one percent of respondents have considered leaving teaching in the last year—more than 83 percent know someone who has already left. KY3
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After a volunteer workday on July 24th, Springfield city crews announced that storm debris pickups will be delayed until the week of September 11th instead of beginning on August 11th in council Zone One. The change follows the June 29th storm—with new dates for other zones still pending—so residents should expect further updates soon. OzarksFirst.com

- ➤ Jordan Valley Community Health Center finished the first phase of its Kingsley dental clinic expansion, growing capacity from 4 operatories to 25 treatment rooms. Expanded dental services for children and adults with sensory friendly features began on August 4. KY3
