- ➤ After about six dozen nominations came in, 16 candidates now vie in the final year contest, Captain Springfield 10, to become the tenth winner. Each round of voting will last about 24 hours and voters are asked to vote only once per hour to avoid mass votes being deleted—ensuring a fair contest. Springfield News-Leader

- ➤ On July 30 and 31, the Humane Society and Christian County Sheriff's Office rescued 225 animals—mostly 211 small-breed dogs—from a property south of Ozark, with many suffering from severe matting and skin issues; animals taken under a warrant will have a disposition hearing on Aug. 27 while some received emergency care in Springfield. - ➤ The Greene County Sheriff’s Office issued an Endangered Person Advisory for 10-year-old Peyton Smith, who was last seen leaving his home on South Farm Road 119 near Battlefield Sunday night — he is described as 4 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 100 pounds with black hair, brown eyes, and a light complexion. - ➤ Greene County deputies say car break-ins are up across the county this summer, so residents are urged to remove valuables from their cars—locking doors and hiding guns—to help prevent theft. KY3
- ➤ Former Greene County deputy Joseph Schilling, 34, was arrested in June for allegedly stalking a victim over several years and is charged with first-degree stalking and unlawful use of a weapon—he is held in jail with no bond and will appear in court on Oct. 7. OzarksFirst.com
- ➤ The Benton County Sheriff’s Office arrested 70-year-old Jack Allan Wagner from Springfield and charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the 2021 death of Cody Garrett after renewed DNA tests led investigators to reexamine the case, with Wagner admitting his role in planning the crime and a judge setting his bond at $2 million. - ➤ The Sunshine Street Bridge replacement project began Monday morning and will close the road from Scenic Avenue to Kansas Expressway, cutting off one of the busiest routes from Republic to Springfield for four months—engineers set a hard deadline of 120 days while keeping one lane open in each direction for business access. MoDOT advises drivers to use alternate state routes like West Bypass and Chestnut Expressway during this period. KY3
- ➤ Springfield Police Department official Cris Swaters said heavy construction on West Sunshine Street—causing delays for drivers—is a major concern, and the department is hosting National Night Out today to promote neighborhood safety.
