COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Springfield is set to host the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival on Aug. 8 to 9 where over 65,000 visitors are expected to enjoy live music, parades, car and motorcycle shows, exhibits, food and shopping. Organizers are asking for more than 100 volunteers to support events such as classic car parades and motorcycle activities—volunteers will receive a festival T-shirt, a Discovery Center pass and $5 in Hold Fast Beer Bucks. - ➤ Today, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield open the new Risdal Family Teen Center for Great Futures at 10 a.m. at 804 W. Catalpa where teenagers can tour the building, view exhibits, and learn about programs that prepare them for a successful future. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Monday, August 18 and registration for the 2025-2026 school year is now open. OzarksFirst.com

- ➤ A Springfield man, Lilburn Motley, 70, pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend in 2021 and was sentenced to life in prison by Greene County Judge Jerry Harmison on July 31 — Motley said he shot her to shut her up. Springfield Daily Citizen
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Large groups of dragonflies have swarmed Springfield this summer because heavy spring rains boosted the mosquito population, said retired biology professor Chris Barnhart at Rountree Elementary—he explained that the insects are harmless and help reduce pests. Springfield Daily Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Up to 170,000 Missourians will lose Medicaid coverage over the next decade under the proposed Big Beautiful Bill while others must meet new federal work requirements to get Medicaid. KY3
- ➤ The Citizens’ Advisory Board unanimously recommended that the city council approve $30 million from the ¾-cent sales tax for a new downtown convention center — a sum designed to match a $30 million state earmark if Gov. Kehoe releases the funds next fiscal year. City staff said spending will likely begin after the Nov. 4 election when voters decide on a hotel tax increase to help cover the project's remaining $175 million cost. Springfield Daily Citizen
