- ➤ The Historic C-Street Summer Fair kicked off today at 10 a.m. on Commercial with contests, food trucks, eating contests, and 50 vendors, and it will run until 6 p.m. Organizers expect 5,000 to 6,000 people to attend the second year of the fair, a boost for local businesses such as Springfield Brewing Company + Mosaicarose Studio that are benefiting from increased community engagement. - ➤ Ozarks Food Harvest will resume its backpack program to supply nonperishable, kid-friendly food to students facing food insecurity as school begins and is seeking volunteers to pack food for over 50 schools across more than 15 counties—volunteers may commit as little as three hours. Local volunteer Jela Cotton and Director Jordan Browning stressed the need for more helpers as the program expands weekend support—families will benefit from steady access to food during the school year. - ➤ Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield is hosting educational events on Sunday to mark the 164th anniversary of the battle on August 10 when the Confederacy won; the programs include a ranger-led artillery session from 11 a.m. to noon, a talk by Dr. Jeremy Neely at 1 p.m., and an exhibit on Civil War medicine at 3 p.m.—each session designed to show visitors how the battle shaped history. - ➤ Corn sweat refers to the process (evapotranspiration) during which corn plants release water vapor, and with millions of acres in Missouri, billions of gallons of moisture may be added to the air amid this week’s heat dome even though it makes up only about 10% of overall humidity. - ➤ Officer Jeremiah Lockett became the department’s first Black sergeant in Springfield Police Department after 14 years working mainly in the Traffic Unit+ he will now supervise a squad of south Springfield patrol officers, a promotion praised by Police Chief Paul Williams. - ➤ Springfield City Council will vote today on an ordinance to expand alcohol permits for events along Downtown, Walnut and Commercial Street, which could allow hundreds more events to sell drinks.
