CRIME NEWS

  • A Greene County judge sentenced an Ozark woman to 30 days in jail after she pleaded Alford to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in connection with a May crash that killed Drury University student Mercedes Luna—she was trying to pass a FedEx truck in a no passing zone.  KY3
  • A Springfield man, Russell Lee Deck Jr., 47, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison without parole—he pleaded guilty on Nov. 8 to a meth distribution conspiracy and firearm charges stemming from a 2022 incident.  OzarksFirst.com
  • The U.S. Attorney’s Office and Springfield Police Department will hold a news conference Friday, July 25 at 2 p.m. at 901 St. Louis Street in Springfield to announce indictments in a multi-million-dollar illegal gambling ring operating in southwest Missouri (other law enforcement agencies are also involved).  OzarksFirst.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • MSU students in an archaeological field school discovered the foundation of the William Townsend house, built in the 1830s, at the Darr Agricultural Center — the site touches Nathanael Greene Park and shows early Springfield life. Dr. Daniel Pierce and Kevin Cupka Head said they will return to the site for more work, which may include searching for a lost cemetery.  OzarksFirst.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Springfield-Branson National Airport is on track for a record-breaking year as it has added 12.1% more seats + carried 9.2% more passengers with 726,588 travelers so far, and if the trend continues it will surpass 1.5 million passengers. The airport is beginning improvements + investing $35 million in construction projects set for completion by the end of 2026.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield City Council will vote Monday night on a ballot measure proposing a 3% tax on hotel and motel guests—this tax will help fund a new downtown convention center. If approved, the measure will appear on the November ballot and start an educational campaign to secure a $30 million state match for the project.  KSMU
