CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield man, James Bass, was charged with multiple felony child sex crimes including statutory sodomy and child molestation after a witness reported a scared 16-year-old victim outside his trailer at Homestead Acres Mobile Home Park on W. Chestnut Expressway—police said he admitted to the assaults during an interview and evidence was found at his residence.  OzarksFirst.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Over 80 vintage Corvettes were showcased at the Springfield Expo Center on Friday in a competition hosted by the St. Louis & Kansas City chapters of the National Corvette Restorers Society where judges compared each car to its factory original condition. The show continues today until 4 p.m. and costs $5 for general admission.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Senate approved a funding package that cut $1.1 billion from public media—forcing immediate budget cuts for KSMU and Ozarks Public Television. General manager Rachel Knight said the cuts will lower local programming and paid internships for journalism students while the stations avoid shutting down.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield has rescheduled its storm debris volunteer cleanup day to Thursday, July 24 after canceling the July 17 event due to forecasted severe weather. Debris pickup will occur by neighborhood from August 11 to September 5 and residents should place organic debris curbside before their zone’s scheduled date.  Springfield News-Leader

  • Women’s sports are drawing record viewers as national broadcasts show more events; Nielsen said the 2024 College Basketball Women’s Championship game drew 19 million viewers*a record increase over the men’s title game*. Local teams like Mizzou are seeing more support as fans and sponsors back the sport.  KY3
  • The Springfield Cardinals and SpringNet are partnering to offer free Wi-Fi for fans at Hammons Field—part of an effort to improve the ballpark experience. The next homestand began on July 18th and will continue through July 20th against the Wichita Wind Surge.  OzarksFirst.com
