CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Bryon Heard was charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child—after an ATV wreck on Oct. 3rd, 2024 near Jean St. and Missouri St.—that killed his 8-year-old daughter, with authorities noting he had drugs in his system. OzarksFirst.com
- ➤ A Greene County judge said the trial is off for an Ozark woman accused of causing a deadly crash in May 2021 near Rogersville—Marjorie Dewitt faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, leaving the scene, and tampering with evidence after allegedly passing a Federal Express truck in a no-passing zone on State Highway 125. - ➤ Blake L. Gentry, an 18-year-old from Springfield, was arrested in Nixa on July 13 after he fled a police stop for speeding and is facing charges including aggravated fleeing a stop, driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving, and driving without a valid license + he was found hiding in a creek bed and is held at Christian County Jail on a $20,000 bond. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ozarks Tech will launch a new radiography degree this fall to train health professionals in medical imaging, beginning with 20 students in August—adding another 20 in January. The program is part of an alliance with Missouri State University, Springfield Public Schools and CoxHealth aimed at addressing the local shortage of imaging professionals. Springfield News-Leader

- ➤ Springfield’s Environmental Services launched the Greene Goosechase, an online scavenger hunt where residents complete monthly missions to learn about protecting our air, water and land resources (July’s focus is on avoiding single-use plastics) while earning points and prizes, and the challenge will run from June through May. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On July 9, the city council’s Plans and Policies Committee discussed changes to a towing ordinance that has led to 24 vehicles being towed, including 12 still impounded, amid concerns the law may burden low-income drivers. Some council members proposed a maximum towing fee and payment plans—while police noted the ordinance has helped increase vehicle registration and boost school tax revenues. Springfield Daily Citizen
- ➤ Modot will begin work on the Sunshine Street Bridge project on August 4 after a delay from March, demolishing and rebuilding the 1963 bridge over the MNA Railroad between Kansas Expressway and Scenic Avenue to fix safety concerns. Sunshine Street from east of Scenic Avenue to west of Marion Avenue will be closed for up to four months, and detours on James River Freeway — Kansas Expressway — Chestnut Expressway — and US 160 will serve more than 26,000 vehicles daily.
