CRIME NEWS

  • Former Greene County Sheriff’s Office employee Jessy Snow pleaded guilty to misuse of information by a public official after a 2024 incident at Dollar Tree in Springfield and was sentenced on June 30 to a suspended one-year jail term, unsupervised probation, and $141 in court costs.  OzarksFirst.com
  • A Strafford woman was sentenced in federal court on July 2 for using her employer’s credit card to charge nearly $295K in fraudulent purchases — her actions led to the shutdown of Mears Floral, a Springfield business that served the community for over 75 years. She received a 36‑month prison sentence without parole and three years of supervised release with an order for restitution.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Missouri will launch sports betting by December which experts say may bring nearly $28 million per year in revenue — they also warn that bankruptcies and suicides could increase — a concern echoed by financial and mental health specialists.  KY3

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kelly McGowen from the University of Missouri Extension Office advises residents cleaning up storm damage to use caution when removing fallen branches and cutting damaged trees with a chainsaw. She recommends pruning damaged branches so that trees can recover (video advice available).  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal budget bill could shift billions in Medicaid and SNAP costs to Missouri—projecting a nearly $1 billion gap in general revenue starting in fiscal year 2027. Lawmakers warn that cuts in federal funding and new tax rules will force tough choices for health care and state spending in coming years.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield native W. Brent Powell became the chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court, and his two-year term began on July 1—he will serve until June 30 while succeeding Judge Mary R. Russell.  Springfield Daily Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Humane Society advises Springfield pet owners to keep their pets indoors during tonight’s Independence Day celebrations to avoid loud noises and bright lights. The group recommends updating pet ID tags (and microchip info) and offering comfort since shelters typically see a spike in pet intakes on July 5 (historically the busiest day).  OzarksFirst.com
  • Community Blood Center of the Ozarks has issued an emergency appeal for O Negative, O Positive, and A Negative blood as supplies drop to less than a one-day reserve ahead of the busy holiday period. A blood drive is set for July 7 at First Presbyterian Church in Branson—eligible donors are urged to donate immediately.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nick Raquet, a 29-year-old left-hander who returned to baseball after a three-year break, pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts as the Springfield Cardinals beat Northwest Arkansas 4-3 on July 1 at Hammons Field. The former enterprise risk consultant has not allowed a run since May 22 (he now holds a 7-0 record as a relief pitcher).  Springfield Daily Citizen
