COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 26, nonprofit leaders met at The Library Center to discuss funding challenges amid recent freezes and cuts. Panelists said lost grants — including figures like $525,000 and $4 million— have increased uncertainty for programs that serve low-income and vulnerable residents.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield man is facing felony charges after he allegedly hit a postal worker with a wooden board on June 18 at 10:30 a.m. on South Virginia Avenue — the worker, making his first route delivery, suffered a concussion and said he believes the attack may have been racially motivated.  KY3
  • On Tuesday, June 24, a Houston man named Nigel Dwayne Luchin was sentenced to four years in prison for stealing $30,700 from a bank ATM in Ozark on October 30 when his group dismantled the machine with a stolen pickup—he left his Texas ID in the truck and must pay $175,700 in restitution.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield woman Larissa Stewart was charged with two counts of DWI and third-degree assault—she crashed her SUV while trying to cross Sunshine Street near Grant Avenue, hitting a motorcycle and a utility pole, with her blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit causing Matthew Sisak’s death in May 2024.  KY3

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A flash flood warning has been issued for Greene County, so residents should monitor weather updates (using the Ozarks First Weather App) as heavy rains may cause dangerous flooding.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Utilities refinanced its bonds after board approval in February and city council approval in March and issued new bonds on June 18 that will save customers $1.3 million each year starting in 2026. The remaining $307 million of the original $615 million debt is set to be paid off by 2036.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Springfield finished key safety improvements at the dangerous Campbell Avenue and Grand Street intersection as part of its Safer Streets SGF program—changes include new lane configurations and crosswalk upgrades that aim to reduce crashes.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • On June 27, National HIV Testing Day provided free testing at Jordan Valley Community Health Center and the AIDS Project of the Ozarks offered testing through August 31 while the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services noted that around 10,000 people in the state live with HIV and 500 are diagnosed each year (ages 13 to 64 are recommended by the CDC to get tested regularly).  KY3
