COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chance—a malnourished Shepherd mix—was taken in by Rescue One and is slowly recovering under the care of foster Stephen Brewster; the dog has gained weight and his hair is growing back as he prepares for adoption.  KY3
  • Eligible seniors in Springfield can sign up for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program that gives them a $50 voucher to buy Missouri-grown fruits, vegetables or honey at local farmers markets through October. Applicants must provide proof of income, identity and residency to receive their voucher the same day.  KY3

CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield police responded to a shooting on June 22 at 4:14 a.m. at 2034 W. Webster St.—where 19-year-old Lavontae Bennett died—and arrested 22-year-old Bodee Melton from Willard on second degree murder charges while detectives continue to investigate.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Police are investigating two overnight shootings in Springfield—at 2:04 a.m. on the 500 block of East St. Louis Street, four people sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and at 4:14 a.m. on West Webster Street, 19-year-old Lavontae Bennett died at the scene.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri residents can now legally buy fireworks but must follow different local rules—Springfield bans fireworks in the city limits while other towns set specific dates and times for usage.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Springfield City Council approved a large multi-use housing development on north side Monday. The 104-acre project will include up to 219 single-family homes, 574 apartments and 84 tiny homes — and the council will now review a detailed site plan before work begins.  KY3
  • Seniors in Greene County must submit their Senior Tax Credit applications by June 30 if they own and live in their primary home + the county received over 4,000 new applications and 500 reapplications so far. Applications can be mailed, emailed or submitted in person at the historic courthouse + the process includes a verification of residency.  KY3
