COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, June 20 at 1100 N. Hampton Ave — a short program and reception will follow — to celebrate the renovated Silver Springs Park Pavilion and Amphitheatre. The project, funded by a $1.5 million ARPA grant, added new amphitheater seating, updated restrooms, and a warming kitchen.  Springfield News-Leader

CRIME NEWS

  • U.S. District Judge Steven R. Bough sentenced Melvin Navarro Morgan, 31, to 210 months in federal prison without parole and 5 years of supervised release for illegally possessing firearms and intent to distribute drugs like methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine—Morgan had fled from officers in January 2023 and was later arrested after a search of his home revealed drugs and guns.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials broke ground on the rehabilitation of Historic City Hall on Tuesday, June 17th, reopening the first floor for a community-focused lobby. The project added a vertical core (with an elevator, staircase, and restrooms) to enhance public facilities.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Federal funding for the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program in southwest Missouri is uncertain beyond June 30—threatening the service to over 180 children and support for 30 senior volunteers, and program director Christopher Bell urged lawmakers to expedite the release of approved funds.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Residents in Rountree say train horns disrupt sleep and daily routines as loud blasts come early in the morning and extend into the evening. City officials explain that restarting a quiet zone would need neighborhood support and cost between $1.5M and $2M—funds that must cover necessary safety upgrades.  KY3
  • The Ozarks Transportation Organization discussed its 2026-2029 improvement plan at a Wednesday meeting and announced it will expand I-44 to three lanes from Springfield into Strafford—this project will give first responders a clear work zone during crashes—and OTO leaders will also review other road and trail projects while inviting public comment.   KY3
  • The City of Springfield removed two pieces of the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge at a kickoff ceremony—city leaders and community members signed a metal beam for its restoration. The work will continue until early 2026—when the bridge is expected to be fully restored.  OzarksFirst.com
