COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Two Springfield realtors are hosting a free microchip event on June 7 to help local pet owners ensure their dogs and cats are microchipped — the event aims to boost pet safety and registration. KY3
- ➤ Fleet Feet Springfield hosted The Big Fun Run on Wednesday, June 4 at 5:45 p.m. to encourage residents to get outside on Global Running Day—food trucks, raffles, snacks, music, and free t-shirts for the first 100 participants were available along one- and three-mile routes from the Fleet Feet store to East Lark Street, down East Lakewood Street and back up National Avenue. - ➤ On Sunday, a shred event will take place at the Caliber Collision parking lot on West Sunshine next to KY3 studios where residents can securely dispose of old tax documents and sensitive papers from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fundraiser, hosted by the Community Partnership of the Ozarks to support Crime Stoppers, requires cash payments of $5 for a small box or $10 for a large box. - ➤ U.S. Marshals arrested the fifth suspect, Arshaun Bradley (21) from Springfield after he had been on the run for over a year and he now faces a first-degree murder charge for the November shooting death of Chaviz Nguyen in downtown Springfield. KY3
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Springfield Public School District now has 20 tornado safe rooms built from voter-approved bond issues to protect students and staff during severe weather. Outside school hours, these shelters (including gymnasiums at elementary sites) open for 10 minutes after a tornado warning to serve the community. KSMU
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers approved a $50 million appropriation for the MOScholars program to help boost private school scholarships while public schools retained full funding. State Treasurer Vivek Malek said the funds will expand the program for over 6,000 students next year and may face legal challenges—raising concerns about using state general revenue for private education. - ➤ City consultants launched a study on a 3.1 mile stretch of Sunshine Street between Glenstone Avenue and Kansas Expressway—gathering public input at an open house on Tuesday and planning a design charrette this summer—to guide future improvements in safety and economic growth.
