- ➤ A new community fridge called the giving hub will soon reopen on North Broadway Avenue after being moved from its original location at the Drew Lewis Foundation due to a last-minute city issue—designed by Drury University architecture students led by Professor Traci Sooter to help Grant Beach residents with food access and transit needs, with Springfield Community Gardens set to stock it with fresh produce and donations. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Arshaun Bradley, the fifth and final suspect in the fatal shooting of Chaviz Nguyen, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Illinois on June 3 and had been on the run since the November 14 incident on Grant Avenue near College Street that killed Nguyen and injured his pregnant girlfriend. - ➤ A Springfield man faces two felony charges after a five-week-old baby died on November 8 from asphyxiation in an unsafe sleep environment—he told police he wrapped the baby in a blanket and went to sleep while waiting for the other caretaker to respond. OzarksFirst.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Springfield Public Schools raised over 67,000 meals during the 14th annual Food Fight contest in March and April with help from 38 schools and four offices to support Ozarks Food Harvest. The food will be distributed across 28 counties—meeting urgent needs in our community. OzarksFirst.com
- ➤ Five local high school graduates (from Ozark, Spokane, Strafford and Springfield) were named finalists for the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program with awards ranging from $500 to $2,000 as they plan to study fields including computer science, pre-law, international relations and aerospace engineering. They are among over 2,900 national winners (57 from Missouri) with additional winners to be announced in July. Springfield News-Leader
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 20, the Springfield-Greene County Library District board approved a budget with $20,174,991 in revenues and expenses that will give library employees an almost 9% pay raise—4.5% in July and 4.3% in January. The plan also uses a more than $1.8 million surplus to add funds to the reserve so the district will not need to borrow money for upcoming construction projects and staffing increases. - ➤ Springfield is showing early results of a $702,000 study to improve the Sunshine corridor from Glenstone to Kansas Expressway—this study aims to boost safety, revitalization, engagement, place, and community balance with funds from the American Rescue Plan and a local sales tax, and final plans will be set by early 2026.
