COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michael Durbin, a former Nixa councilman, placed a flagpole a year ago and is in a standoff with his homeowners association, which fined him $100; State Sen. Mike Moon sent a support letter+ and the American flag still flies above his home.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Some pools across the Ozarks face a lifeguard shortage as Buffalo struggled to open its pool because of staffing issues. Springfield Parks and Recreation has enough lifeguards to start the season today, but it is recruiting skilled workers, and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board offers Red Cross training this month.  KY3
  • After baseball-sized hail damaged his roof on April 28, veteran Randy Craig nearly fell victim to door-to-door scammers until Apex Roofing & Restoration stepped in to install a free roof on May 26. The work would have cost between $11,000 and $15,000 if charged.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • RepMo Rotary Club will host Republic Day of Service on Saturday, June 13. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast at the Community Kitchen and include projects like landscaping at Lyon Elementary and trash pickup along Highway 60 for local residents to get involved.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Springfield News-Leader reporter Marta Mieze is one of four journalists honored by the Missouri Press Association with the William E. James Outstanding Young Journalist award; she will receive a plaque + a $500 check at the annual convention in Columbia on Sept. 26.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springfield Public Schools' foundation launched a campaign today to raise $300K by Aug. 31 for teacher-led classroom projects & grants aimed at filling last year's funding gap. Funds will support initiatives in September that help meet evolving classroom needs.  Springfield News-Leader
  • FSPS launched its Grant SPS campaign — an effort to raise $300,000 by August 31 — to fund fall grants for innovative classroom projects in Springfield Public Schools. The initiative will support teachers across three grant categories to help students succeed.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transportation planners are reviewing community feedback to improve safety along the Highway 60 corridor east of Highway 65 (a zone with high crash rates). The first public session was held May 28 at Courageous Church and an online survey will remain open until June 11 for input.  Springfield Daily Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Clint Strong has been named chief medical officer by Jordan Valley Health, effective June 1, after nearly 14 years with the organization. With extensive experience in pediatrics, hospital rounding, and express care (and other specialties), he will provide leadership across all medical areas serving southwest Missouri.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Dorothy Cote started 417 Virtual Companions today to help seniors connect through scheduled phone, video calls and messaging. The service offers weekly check-ins priced from $20 to $50 and plans to expand with additional staff as demand grows.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Today, the Missouri Department of Conservation advises residents to wear long pants tucked in socks and use bug spray with DEET or Picaridin when outdoors to prevent ticks; if a tick is found, use tweezers to remove it completely + store it on an index card for testing.  KY3

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield is hosting the Parade of Homes from June 5-7 with eight homes priced between $200,000 and $1.5 million (offering budget-friendly to luxury options).
