COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Safe to Sleep women's shelter opened its new permanent home Thursday, May 28 at the Crossline Community Outreach campus at 3055 E. Division St. The Romona Baker Emergency Women's Shelter offers 39 sleeping pods, 11 emergency beds and a full-service kitchen to support guests.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield’s DK Memorial Track Meet will be held at 4 p.m. on June 6 at JFK Stadium to raise funds for local children’s sports access via Deverin’s Locker (Ambassadors for Children). The event will include races, relays and family-friendly activities for all ages.  Springfield News-Leader
  • The Greater Springfield Garage Sale and Marketplace runs today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds (E-Plex indoor booths include antiques, clothing, electronics, and more), drawing hundreds of bargain hunters and vendors from several states.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri State University announced that actor Rainn Wilson (known for his role in The Office) will headline its Public Affairs Conference on Sept. 29 at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, launching three days of free, public events.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools launched its Grant SPS campaign on Thursday, May 28 to raise $300,000 by Aug. 31 for classroom projects; funds will be distributed in September to teachers and principals with innovative ideas (even small donations help reach the goal).  Springfield Daily Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missouri DNR has launched a new app called MoHIC that shows live maps of flood and drought conditions across the state, helping farmers, landowners & emergency managers plan for weather changes. The app displays real-time gauge data and flood predictions, and users can set up alerts for local streams.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers approved a healthcare bill that will let women fill a 12-month supply of birth control pending the governor’s signature + women on Medicaid already have full-year access.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Ozarks Lunkers start Year 3 today when they host Eau Claire Axemen at Wilson Logistics Arena at 6:30 p.m. Coach Cam Bruffett said the team – featuring a talented roster and strong defense – aims for a championship.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Missouri State shortstop Logan Fyffe— the Conference USA batting champ with a .371 average, nine home runs, and 43 RBIs—has stepped into a key role as his team builds on last Friday’s NCAA Tournament opener. Missouri State prepares for additional Lawrence Regional games at noon today.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Arkansas rallied in the NCAA Lawrence Regional on Friday at Hoglund Ballpark, coming back from an early deficit to win by a score of nine to five over Missouri State. Missouri State will meet Northeastern at noon Saturday in the elimination round.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • On Friday, May 29, Springfield Catholic won a 12-0 mercy rule contest against top-ranked Logan-Rogersville as senior pitcher Rhett Layne threw five scoreless innings. The team will face Excelsior Springs (27-7) at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ozark Mountain Sports Complex.  Springfield Daily Citizen
