- ➤ Community Partnership of the Ozarks held its May Day of Hope event yesterday at the Green County Election Center — free haircuts, nursing services, HIV and STI testing, and voter registration were offered to people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers also connected attendees to additional health, employment, and legal support. KY3

- ➤ Construction on Dillard’s new store is moving fast at Battlefield Mall in South Springfield—workers are converting the old Sears into one expanded, one-level location that combines two stores. It will have a soft opening on July 26th and a grand opening on July 31st to offer a modern shopping experience. OzarksFirst.com
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police arrested Kayley and Michael Birnbaum in Springfield for the 2021 murder of Cody Garrett after DNA tests linked them to his death—both now face charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action and are held with no bond. Springfield News-Leader
- ➤ A judge accepted a guilty plea from Lilburn W. Motley, 66, who is accused of fatally shooting his longtime girlfriend Lavona R. Haddock, 61, in Springfield in December 2021—police arrested him at the scene after he said he shot her to shut her up, a claim that family members have questioned. KY3
- ➤ Recorded jail calls revealed suspect Elysha Bedell planned to seek a speedy trial and appeal for alleged poor legal help—after the recordings played on May 27, he waived his right to a speedy trial and his trial for the fatal 2023 shooting of Chaviz Nguyen is now set for December. - ➤ Rural Missouri still faces hunger as Senate lawmakers consider the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which may cut SNAP benefits and put 150,000 people at risk of losing food support—68,000 could lose all benefits. Local agencies say that in counties like Texas, Howell and Ozark, food need is worse with 1 in 4 children affected. KY3
- ➤ Springfield Police Department will reopen its southside lobby—located at 2620 W. Battlefield Road—on June 2 with hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the department will extend telephone reporting hours to 7 p.m. during the same days at 417-864-1810. Springfield Daily Citizen
