  • On Monday, May 25, hundreds gathered at Phelps Grove Park for 'Together Across Springfield' to mark the 40th anniversary of 'Hands Across America.' Local activists provided food, clothing and essentials — a follow-up event is planned in Kansas City for September.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • A dog nicknamed 'I-44' that was once spotted near a median off the busy interstate is now thriving in a new home thanks to a trapper, according to KY3’s Leigh Moody.  KY3

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Memorial Day kicked off what highway patrol calls the 100 deadliest days, when teen drivers face a high risk of fatal car crashes. The National Road Safety Foundation advises parents to review safety tips before summer travel.  KY3

  • AMC Springfield 11 closed on May 26 due to a water main leak — online tickets were refunded and physical ticket holders will receive passes later.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 'Hitchhikers' mural was painted on the Park East Building in downtown Springfield during the Overlay Art + Culture Festival in October 2025 and has earned national awards; it received Regional Gold for the Midwest and a National Silver Award, enriching the new Birthplace of Route 66 Plaza.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The Springfield Greene County Library District is set to host the traveling exhibit Americans and the Holocaust from June 15 through July 27 in its Library Center Reading Room. The display uses 1930s and 1940s primary source materials to show how Americans responded to Nazism and war.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators, parents and lawmakers are set to revisit a screen-time bill in January 2027 after the measure failed this summer. Retired teacher Candice Robb (mother of two) said that less screen time could improve learning for young students.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • David Schaumburg becomes the new director of aviation at Springfield-Branson National Airport effective June 28; he replaces Brian Weiler who retired June 25 — Schaumburg previously served as assistant director since 2017 and has strong local ties.  Springfield Daily Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers passed a bill allowing women with private insurance to receive a 12-month supply of birth control if signed by the governor, expanding access from 2027. Advocates say the measure eases barriers by reducing time, childcare, and travel challenges + cutting refill trips.  Springfield News-Leader

SPORTS NEWS

  • Springfield Catholic beat Eldon 12-3 at Meador Park on Tuesday, May 26, advancing to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2023 with key plays from Nic Ruter, Nate Lask, and Rhett Layne.
