- ➤ Springfield’s annual kickball tournament was nationally recognized when SGF Kickball won the Best Neighborhood Program award in Social Revitalization this month — the local team competed against groups from Texas, Florida, California, Arizona, and Indiana. - ➤ Local outfitters are canceling Memorial Day floats as heavy rain has caused flooding on the James river and raised water levels on the Finley river—dangerous currents could put boaters at risk. KY3
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 42nd annual National Street Rod Association Mid-America Street Rod Nationals took place this weekend in Springfield and featured about 1,100 classic, custom, pick-up, and muscle cars on display. The event also included a vintage automotive parts swap meet and arts and crafts show—poor weather slowed turnout. KY3
- ➤ In 1953, students at Elfindale took part in the May Procession led by Patricia Meeth under the instruction of the Sisters of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. They walked to the chapel where a statue of the Virgin Mary was crowned with a garland of flowers — a blend of school and religious traditions — highlighted in the historic photo. - ➤ Starting June 1, the Library will host its Summer Reading Program 'Color Our World' until Aug. 9—offering fun reading challenges and free events for Tiny Tots, Kids, Teens and Adults. - ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation announced that squirrel hunting began on May 24 and will run until Feb 15 while black bass hunting will end on Feb 28.
