COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Castaway Animals Rescue Effort is waiving adoption fees for dogs weighing 50 lbs or more through the end of May because the shelter on West Sunshine Street is at full capacity. Adopted dogs must be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and heartworm tested — steps taken to ensure their ongoing care.  KY3
  • Just over 3,200 City Utilities customers lost power Saturday morning as severe rainstorms and high winds caused outages across the northwestern part of town—utility crews expect power to be fully restored in seven to eight hours as they replace damaged poles.  KY3
  • On May 28, the first Honor Flight of 2025 will carry 81 veterans and 81 guardians from Springfield to Washington, D.C. The flight will depart at 4:30 a.m. from Springfield-Branson National Airport and follow a revised itinerary—landing at Dulles and using people movers to tour military memorials and have lunch at the Lincoln Memorial—to return to Springfield around 7:15 to 7:30 p.m.  Springfield News-Leader

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters in Springfield conducted 10 water rescues on Saturday using a water rescue boat to save a person stuck in a tree (the crew acted quickly to reach the victim) while Logan-Rogersville and Battlefield Fire departments helped drivers caught in rising water (one driver self-rescued his vehicle onto dry land).  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri State's relief pitcher Curry Sutherland—a Logan-Rogersville grad—pitched 6⅔ innings of shutout relief on May 24th to help the Bears beat Illinois-Chicago 4-1 at Duffy Bass Field in the MVC tournament. The win keeps the Bears in the contest as they seek to force a championship game against top seed Murray State.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Strafford's Ava Lane won three state medals on Saturday at the Class 3 championships by edging out Gabrielle Campbell in the 400-meter race — her finish decided by less than a hundredth of a second. Local athletes from Ash Grove, Fair Grove and Springfield Catholic earned medals in events like the high jump, hurdles and relays — adding to an impressive showing at the state meet.  Springfield Daily Citizen
