- ➤ This Memorial Day weekend, community events in the Ozarks are set to kick off summer with activities such as a replica Vietnam War Memorial at Big Cedar Lodge and an outdoor movie at Jordan Valley Park—offering family-friendly ways to honor the holiday. Additional events in Springfield and nearby Nixa include a native plant sale, a kintsugi workshop, a patriotic picnic, and remembrance ceremonies at The X Center and Springfield National Cemetery—providing many options for all ages. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Alejandro Lopez, the former Greene County jailer, pleaded guilty in March to charges for exposing himself and assaulting a female inmate and was sentenced on May 16 to 90 days in jail with two years of supervised probation—he is now confined at the same jail where he once worked. - ➤ Deputies investigated a homicide in Lakewood Mobile Home Park after a 911 call at 2:15 a.m. Saturday led them to find 35-year-old Gustavo Maradiaga Salgado and 28-year-old Edyn Inestroza Gutierrez, who were illegally in Springfield from Honduras, while neighbors reported heavy police activity and previous disturbances. - ➤ Springfield Public Schools celebrated the graduation of more than 1,800 seniors from Central, Glendale, Hillcrest, Parkview and Kickapoo on May 17 at Southern Bank Arena on the Missouri State University campus—each school held its own personalized ceremony with unique songs, traditions and speakers. - ➤ The Springfield City Council held a public hearing Monday night at 6:30 p.m. to consider a bill that would change the tax plan for Brody Corners so it could allow home building along with $27 million in commercial development. The change may bring another $10.5 million in investment—officials said—and aims to attract more growth at the site on West Battlefield. KY3
