BUSINESS NEWS

  • The property behind Red's Giant Hamburg was sold for $575,000 at an auction held on May 15 at 2301 W. Sunshine St., with about 30 people bidding in person and more bidding online or by phone. The sale included most kitchen equipment and furnishings but did not include the naming rights—using the name for future business will require separate leasing.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CRIME NEWS

  • Tim Magee, a coach at Willard High, was sentenced Friday, May 16 to five years in prison for sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl he coached — the victim gave a nearly hour-long impact statement detailing his grooming of her.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The Missouri Attorney General’s Office charged Jeremy Jack Watson, owner of Outdoor Creations and Designs in Greene County, with six counts of deceptive business practice, two counts of stealing $25,000 or more, and three counts of financial exploitation for taking payments without completing work or issuing refunds, causing victims to lose $157k— a warrant has been issued for his arrest.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Police say a worker saw two people break into a church gym on the 700 block of West Talmage (west of Doling Park and across from Watkins Elementary) around 4:00 Friday morning before the burglars fled in a pickup truck that later crashed into a tree on North Broadway Avenue.  KY3

CULTURE NEWS

  • USA TODAY readers ranked Route 66 as one of America’s top scenic drives and Springfield is known as its birthplace where the road got its name in 1926. The city hosts a free Birthplace of Route 66 Festival from August 8 to 9 and will host a national centennial kickoff on April 30, 2026 — a nod to its rich history that includes the nation’s first drive-thru at Red's Giant Hamburg.  Springfield News-Leader

  • Ozarks Tech officials praised a new bill that will guarantee credit hours in key career programs transfer smoothly from two-year colleges to four-year universities—students can avoid repeating courses as the law now awaits the governor's signature and colleges begin planning new degree programs for the next school year.  Springfield Daily Citizen

  • Springfield Cardinals top prospect JJ Wetherholt answered rapid-fire questions from host Steve Granado—explaining his nickname, discussing Korean food and sharing his experience with the MLB video game The Show.
