COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kyle and Hollie Estes have transformed Cassidy Station at Estes Farm in Christian County into a community space that links local history with future giving—using a planned gift from their life insurance policy to support local causes. They also opened a second location in Springfield’s Galloway neighborhood in March and will add a coffee shop later this summer—demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the region.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation, one of Missouri’s community action groups, is marking 60 years and celebrating its Head Start program by hosting tours and events from May 7 to May 21. A special celebration will be held on May 20 at Dunnegan Park in Bolivar + leaders expressed hope to continue their vital work in the years ahead.  KY3

CRIME NEWS

  • A Nixa man admitted to shooting his girlfriend during an argument in 2022 when he was intoxicated and was sentenced last Tuesday to eight years in prison for domestic assault and armed criminal action — his false statements and efforts to hide the gun delayed proper help —.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, the US drought monitor reported low water levels in northern Missouri as the growing season continued. Local farmers expressed concerns about crop yields while state officials work on a budget and await a new federal farm bill + changes in trade and tax policies to support agriculture.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After an April storm cut power and led to the cancellation of classes on April 30, Springfield Public Schools asked the state for a waiver because the district did not meet the required school days — Superintendent Grenita Lathan said they risk losing $752,467 and expect a decision next week, with the last day set for May 23.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Ozarks Tech board approved a 3% pay raise for all full-time, part-time and adjunct instructors employed on or before March 31. The raise goes into effect July 1 — Chancellor Hal Higdon said the move will help the college remain competitive with Springfield Public Schools and Missouri State University.  Springfield News-Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri State Tax Commission ordered Greene County to raise property and land values by 13—15% after it was found that assessments were below the required minimum. Greene County mailed value change notices this week and property owners can request reviews or file appeals by the deadlines provided.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield's new city manager, David Cameron, will start in July and he said his own struggles with mental health guide his plans to set up support programs for city workers. He plans to make government work easier and trust department heads while building on his experience in southwest Missouri (a 417 kid).  KSMU
