CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Zachary M. Walker (38), a former postal worker, pleaded guilty in federal court to breaking into a local post office and stealing mail; he used his knowledge of the building's security codes to bypass controls. KY3
- ➤ Tina Louise Yager, a 66-year-old Nixa woman, pleaded guilty on May 14 to wire fraud and making false claims as she filed bogus tax returns for Jackson Hewitt customers—she added a fake dependent to boost refunds and kept $16,850—while working on unsupervised probation for an earlier credit card fraud. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Springfield Police Department will offer the Share the Road course Saturday, May 17 to help experienced motorcyclists learn safe riding techniques—participants must have a valid motorcycle endorsement, proper gear, and a street‐legal motorcycle. Additional course dates are set for June 14, September 6, and October 11. KSMU
- ➤ Springfield Public Schools will end classes on Friday, May 23 with an early release—students will return on Tuesday, Aug. 19, and summer officially begins on Sunday, June 1 while the astronomical start is on June 20. Memorial Day will be on Monday, May 26 and many locals see the holiday weekend as the unofficial start of summer. Springfield News-Leader

- ➤ The Missouri Supreme Court will soon decide whether local governments can add extra sales tax on recreational marijuana and could rule by May 27. A Florissant dispensary charges nearly 21% in total tax—raising concerns that counties may lose up to $2.4 million in revenue. KY3
- ➤ Springfield has chosen David Cameron as its next city manager, pending a public vote later this month by the City Council. If approved, he will start on July 7 and earn $350,000 a year (he was picked from 75 applicants and three finalists). Springfield Daily Citizen
