ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A bicyclist died when a car hit him at the intersection of Broadmoor Street and Glenstone Avenue near Hazelwood Cemetery on May 10—police are looking for his next of kin.  Springfield News-Leader

CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield man, Terry M. Heitman—described in court documents as a career criminal with a 46-year fraud history—was charged on May 12 with seven counts of forgery after he allegedly used a fake cashier’s check to try to buy a $450,000 home in University Heights.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Construction on campus began closing Craig Hall on May 12 to build a new performing arts complex and has forced changes to the Tent Theatre season on Missouri State, where new signs—helping visitors find the amphitheatre—will be added amid a revised show lineup featuring live music and period plays that start at 8 p.m.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Schrag was elected president and Kenneth Brooks Miller Jr. was elected vice president of the Missouri Board of Education on Tuesday. Both leaders have strong Springfield ties — Schrag spends part of her time in Springfield with her mayor husband and Miller served in local roles — while they work with state officials amid a major board shakeup.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Missouri State University gained legislative approval to offer doctoral programs as state lawmakers passed bills removing restrictions on duplicating University of Missouri courses & the measures now await Gov. Mike Kehoe’s signature. MSU President Richard "Biff" Williams said the change will let the university expand its offerings to meet regional workforce needs and will go to the Board of Governors in June.  Springfield News-Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Paul Espinosa of Springfield sued Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott and his officers after he was held 7½ hours in jail on July 21 for a suspected DWI—he was experiencing a stroke that later left him blind due to delayed treatment. The suit states he tested 0.00% on a breathalyzer and that a jail officer misled hospital staff, preventing timely administration of clot-dissolving medication.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will adjust services at Bull Shoals + Norfork Lake due to staffing shortages, with the Mountain Home project office reducing hours on Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A moratorium on issuing shoreline use permits, including dock and vegetative management requests, will last until October to let staff focus on core recreation operations.  KY3
  • Springfield is keeping crosswalks safe as the SGF Yields program, started in 2017, uses bright yellow Mr. Walker statues to alert drivers—police conduct yield checks with drones and decoy pedestrians. The program now includes a three-foot rule and has recently expanded into Jackson to boost compliance.  KY3
