  • Quenchers, an 80s and 90s themed beverage shop, will open at 103 W. Mount Vernon St. in Nixa (the former Canton Buffet) to serve dirty sodas, loaded teas and lemonades with over 80 drink choices for Sucker Days on May 15 to 16.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Willow Springs native Hannah Harper — celebrated on May 6 during Hannah Harper Day — was crowned American Idol season 24 winner Monday night and credited her fans for guiding her success.  KY3
  • Springfield's Library Center will host a free program called America 250: The First 90 Years on June 10 at 6:30 p.m.—the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks and Tim Noonan will explore family ties between Revolutionary War figures and their Civil War descendants while serving refreshments.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students were evacuated from Pershing School in east Springfield on Monday morning after smoke was seen in the elementary foyer — the fire department later traced the cause to a fan motor, and classes resumed once the area was cleared.  KY3
  • Missouri State will launch a mobile ticketing system this summer to help buyers order, manage, and transfer tickets with Apple Pay & Google Pay via Paciolan. It will serve athletics & events at Great Southern Bank Arena, Juanita K. Hammons Hall, John Goodman Amphitheatre & Coger Theatre.  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Smoke is visible along Battlefield Road and west Springfield from the city's controlled burn of yard waste at the recycling center after spring storms; residents with sensitive lungs are advised to keep windows closed while the smoke, expected to clear over a few days, lingers before the center reopens today.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport staff at Springfield-Branson National Airport removed most hail-damaged vehicles from the parking lots two weeks after damaging hail swept the area; over 1,000 cars were towed while 15 to 20 remain for owners to pick up as travelers continue their trips.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Titanium and cobalt-chromium alloys from knee and hip replacements survive cremation and are recycled by companies working with local funeral directors, including Greenlawn Funeral Home (3506 N. National Ave.) whose recycling funds support charitable outreach. Families appreciate knowing the metals are not simply thrown away.  Springfield Daily Citizen

  • Twelve-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte joined Missouri State University as an assistant coach on Sunday, starting his coaching career with the school's swimming and diving team (he is set to speak with reporters on Tuesday via Zoom).  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • On Sunday, Missouri State pitcher Tyler Charlton struck out the first three batters to secure a 7-6 sweep over New Mexico State at Meador Park, boosting the Bears' record to 30-17 & setting the stage for a three-game series at Kennesaw State starting May 14.  Springfield Daily Citizen
