ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A six-vehicle crash on US-160 two miles south of Nixa on Thursday night left one person dead and three seriously injured—state highway patrol said a motorcycle swerved into oncoming traffic, triggering a chain reaction that sent a Pontiac head-on and caused others to be taken to Cox South Hospital in Springfield.  OzarksFirst.com
  • A Springfield woman, Jennifer Collier, 43, was hit on May 4 when a Nissan Armada struck her bicycle at West Bypass and College Street, and she died on May 9—Springfield police are still investigating the crash.  OzarksFirst.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield police responded at 10 p.m. on Thursday to reports of a drive-by shooting at Kensington Park Apartments on 1735 W. Bennett where shots fired from a vehicle damaged one apartment building but no one was injured (suspects remain unidentified and potential charges include unlawful use of a weapon and assault).  OzarksFirst.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brick Convention is coming to the Springfield Expo Center today and Sunday, May 11—featuring large LEGO models, interactive building areas and guest appearances from local experts. Organizers say the event will attract fans of all ages and support charity through part of its proceeds.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ECONOMY NEWS

  • High egg prices have many Springfield residents flocking to backyard chickens, with some buying from hatcheries and others renting them—each effort aimed at securing a steady egg supply.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers met at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on May 8 in Springfield to discuss a bill that would legalize video lottery terminals and tax their revenues. Supporters say the change could help fund public programs—while opponents worry it would not stop illegal gambling without stronger enforcement.  Springfield Daily Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local veterinarian Dr. Philip Brown advises that cat and dog owners use tick, flea and heartworm preventatives year-round to protect pets from bobcat fever—a parasitic infection spread by ticks after biting bobcats. He noted that ticks can survive cold weather and stressed that the disease does not spread directly between cats.  KY3
